Developed as part of the Experimental Identity studio at Aalto University, this project proposes an identity concept for Baltic Circle, Helsinki’s international festival for theatre and performance art. The brief called for a dual-layer system: a permanent organizational identity for funding partners and institutional recognisability, alongside an annually changing festival identity to promote the new season through creative and experimental visuals.

The concept we build establishes a modular, responsive “scaffolding” system that functions as a stable structural foundation. The core organizational layer features bold, blurred typography, combining institutional clarity with soft edges that reflect the fluid, evolving nature of performance art. Within this fixed yet flexible framework, invited designers and artists could build a fresh visual language for each edition. The proposed system would give the Baltic Circle a consistent, recognizable institutional voice, while leaving room for creative freedom and experimentation in each year’s new festival identity.
